Official name San Felipe de Puerto Plata.

The capital of the province of Puerto Plata, it is the largest city on the north coast. It offers monuments, interesting places, beautiful beaches, lots of good gastronomy, markets and an incredible number of shops at very favorable prices. Just go a little further from the historic center. It has over 150,000. residents.

In the historic center you can find wonderful streets for perfect photos and videos, a large number of interesting museums and much more. Unfortunately, the Brugal rum distillery has closed its visitor center permanently due to Covid. Don't miss the Macorix rum distillery. A must-see is the Pico Isabel de Tores with its botanical park, located on the outskirts of the city and accessible by cable car.

What to watch out for? This city is visited by tourists from all over the world and the economy of the city mainly depends on them, and the local Dominicans often take advantage of this. If you look for accommodation away from the beaches, e.g. via Airbnb, I recommend staying in the center as much as possible and reading the reviews, you don't have to feel safe in dark alleys among the locals. Often someone approaches you, they want to show you something, offer you something or, for example, accompany you to a chocolate shop, and of course they want money for it. The quickest way to decline is to say you don't speak Spanish or English. In restaurants, and not only in Puerto Plata, it often happens that they charge you a different amount than what is on the menu and you find out on the receipt that the 18% ITBIS (tax) is not included in the price and another 10% extra for service. A total of 28% extra is an amount you won't overlook, so it's a good idea to ask in advance. Before you buy something in a chocolate shop, local shops, supermarkets etc., where they do not have prices listed, always ask for the price in advance. Believe me that in most cases the price is much higher then usual. You can negotiate or go to the next store.
