Dos Poco Locos – Dominican Republic

Home

The Dominican Republic is one of the most diverse countries in the Caribbean. White sand, palm trees, crystal clear sea and rich underwater life do not need to be discussed. Already from the plane, you will understand how green and natural the island is about to visit. A large number of national parks hide lagoons, waterfalls, caves and a wide range of fauna and flora across the island.
In the northwest of the country, palm trees gradually disappear and cacti appear, and here you will find salt deserts. It even snows on the highest mountain, Pico Duarte, in winter.
Slow down. The natives live a slow lifestyle, loud music and entertainment. Tune into their wave and you'll forget all your worries.

Coast

Characteristic coastlines stretch for several hundred kilometers. No wonder this country is a popular holiday destination. The fine white sand and magnificent views of the turquoise water, as if from the front of the catalog, attract tourists from all over the world. The north of the island is popular with water sports enthusiasts and offers suitable conditions all year round. Of course, you won't find white sand all over the country. Some areas are characterized by brown sand, and El Morro in Montecristi has brick-colored sand on the beach.

Traveling through country

Beyond the borders of the hotel complexes, you will get to know the real Dominican Republic. The inland offers incredible virgin nature. It is very difficult to describe the entire landscape in general, as each part of the island is diverse and offers an incredible amount of natural phenomena. The bigger the city, the more culture, shops and lower prices. Small towns offer a greater interplay of tourism and local life.

Dominicans and their culture

Outside the cities, Dominicans live in a rural and simple way. They are often self-sufficient. They raise animals and grow crops that do very well here, thanks to the high humidity and frequent night rains.
There is a widespread Christianity and Jehovist faith. They have regular masses and also take place outside churches in local gated communities.
Everywhere they listen to very loud Latino music, they sing, they dance and they like to have fun. Their lifestyle is very slow, nobody is in a hurry, and forget about punctuality. This means that 10 minutes is an hour or 2 days. You will also recognize the influence of nearby America.
I love the singing supermarket staff who put my shopping in my bags.

History

The Dominican Republic has a varied and interesting history, which you will see in many cities. The original Taino people are revered here and you will often come across them in the form of statues in various places. In 2023, a 5-meter statue of the Taino mother Atabey was sunk in Sosua to restore corals. In the capital Santo Domingo, the Zona Colonial is worth mentioning. A romantic place with monasteries and cobbled walkways from colonial times. Across the country, you will come across 2 main names Gregorio Luperón (president during the 6-year war with Spain) and Juan Pablo Duarte (he contributed to Dominican independence and is referred to as the father of the nation). Statues, museums, street names, national holidays are dedicated to both men... And that's what you'd expect from Columbuús. Colonial architecture can be found in the larger cities and definitely worth mentioning is the port city of Puerto Plata.
